DMOZ and Backlinks
How can being on little old DMOZ help your backlinks
There is much to say about DMOZ. Some hate the wait time, while others get listed within weeks. Some begin to rank well without DMOZ, while others wouldn't rank without DMOZ.
So why the post? Even though there are more than 500 million variables (according to Google) on why a site ranks well for a key term, one of the main ones is Link Building (link popularity). And when done correctly through DMOZ, a wealth of links can be at your disposal.
How to pick a category? Take your time when finding a category. Unlike building links through other "Directory Submission" sites, take your time when choosing a category on DMOZ. Make sure it is the closest category to your overall site.
Title of Site? This is the second most important element of adding your URL. Be specific, and be sure to incorporate your key term. Try to keep your description to under 5 words.
Writing the description? When writing your description, make sure that it matches the META Description on your site. This adds tremendous amounts of value when the DMOZ editor is comparing what you submitted to what your site is saying.
Make sure you only submit your listing once. DMOZ the oldest and most respected directory on the web. Because it is edited by humans, and they receive tens of thousands of request per day, when you resubmit your site out of impatience your site goes to the "newest submissions". So really you are shooting yourself in the foot every time you "resubmit".
Bottom line is once you are accepted by DMOZ, the potential for back links can grow at a speed that you otherwise would not have had. Because DMOZ is so well respected online, other directory sites look to DMOZ to gather information. If you site is on DMOZ, then you are most likely to be added to other directories without the need of spending countless hours/dollars submitting your site to every directory submission site on the web (even though we still suggest doing that).
